****UPDATE MAY 2023*****

SAVE THE HEART DEPT!
HELP KEEP OUR COMMUNITY CENTER ALIVE.

Fully Fund the Heart Dept, to secure our space for the long term. With ways to for everyone to gain resources!

This is the post I never wanted to have to share. But we are in need of advocacy NOW.

It is always important to donate and fund beautiful community work, but now we NEED YOU TO. We could lose the Heart Dept simply from lack of proper advocacy. And it’s. NOT from lack of working every angle we can.

Here’s why and what you can do:

When we earned this MIRACLE of a property in July 2022, we birthed a powerful concept from nothing to something. As a new venture were able to fund raise just enough to get started, but we’ve never had enough to confirm our space long term. We’ve been very successful, month-to-month, consistently growing and even doubling our business in January 2023, but now is the time to secure our lease of this building. The challenge is we are short the deposit and we’ve run out of time.

To secure our place here we need to raise two months deposit, and other important infrastructure funding, in the next 2 to 4 weeks. And although we have absolutely been working tirelessly and advocating for this, for the last four months, we have still not be found the support we need.

We have no more time to waste. It is time to give The Heart Dept the roots it needs, and deserves.

In 10 months we have served an average of 15 to 20,000 people in person, we’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars and supported other organizations in doing the same, and ultimately our greatest success is birthing a beautiful venue and space for BIPOC femme and queer folks.

Here’s our simple and powerful plan to secure our needs :

1. SHARE SHARE SHARE! Repost! make your own post, go live and help us reach a goal of 500 shares on our call to action video. Helping this post to go viral will allow more eyes to see our fundraising links and offerings.

2. PURCHASE A MEMBERSHIP!
Buy one yourself, or sponsor a local organization in need. For just $500-$2000 (a one time purchase) you can access this space for 2023. This includes
co-working, rental hours and community event tickets. If we sell even 40 of our 100 memberships we will have more than enough to secure the lease

3. DONATE to our gofundme, volunteer, or host a fundraiser. Help us spread the word and advocate to others who might have something to share. We can also accept other forms payment, linked at

link.tr/theheartdept

4. ADVOCATE! Do you have a celebrity friend a large platform a company that would love to support a group like ours? Contact them!

We know there are resources and if we do this together, we can reach the right people.

And although we absolutely need to raise about $60,000 in a very short time, our big goal by our 1 year anniversary on Sept 17th 2023 is $333,000. To invest in our incredible Black femme staff, to buy equipment to pay back our wonderful early investors, and set us up for lasting success.

Not only does The Heart Dept deserve this.

You deserve this!

This is a space for all of us. Let’s make sure we take care of it for the years to come.

We love you,
The Heart Dept team

JULY2022

Hi! I'm Artist Shelley Bruce, a Los Angeles native poet, painter, and community organizer. With a 10+ year history of building creative, social justice and wellness-based programming. My work has been featured on HBO, at UCLA, at the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the LA Times, and internationally.

And I have just been offered the opportunity of a lifetime! To manage a building we can covert to a community wellness space!

This is charity and business model already proven to create immense value for BIPOC community, a historically displaced group in Los Angeles. And access to physical, affordable space is paramount for us.

Lovingly named "the Heart Department," I have been entrusted to manage and run the 2022 lease of a beautiful 6,500 sq ft loft in the DTLA arts district after working with the previous owners for the last year. This gorgeous historic loft, with hardwood flooring, exposed brick walls, a baby grand piano, ample natural light, adorned in lush plants and striking artwork is a venue that has already proven to be a valuable mixed-use space. And even more exciting, a now headquarters for our grassroots org, Day of Healing, where we will offer FREE health & wellness services.

We are launching a profit share and community service model for this project that will produce wealth and serve as a community gathering center for all things wellness.

To make this happen, we have some important goals! We are part of the way there, but need to cross the finish line!

This is how we will continue to distribute funds…

$50,000 will allow us to:

  • install an ADA wheelchair-accessible stair lift
  • get ahead on 1-2 months' rent, including move-in costs
  • cover legal, insurance and business expenses
  • compensate our facilitators and staff for our 1st 2 months of free wellness programming ($500-$2000 costs per event)
  • marketing and web design costs

with the full $75,000 we can:

  • cover all of the above items and...
  • pay for the entire lease
  • program the space with free wellness services for 4 months
  • purchase equipment and supplies for venue rental clients
  • confirm a year-long stay in 2023, to expand the business and community share model
