Thank you for your interest in supporting The Head is not the Star of the Body!
My name is Cassie Wang. I am an independent, multidisciplinary artist based in Boston, MA raising $5,500 this month to support my first evening-length work and the wonderful collaborators involved.
ABOUT The Head is not the Star of the Body
The Head is not the Star of the Body is a study on longing, an interdisciplinary performance integrating contemporary dance, ethnography, and generative video art. In response to a selection of songs by Big Thief, the music and lyricism of the American indie folk band serve as inspiration for ethnographic inquiry and movement research. The process is a practice of measuring distance, meditating on desire as a reflection of Self, and discovering what it means to hold another’s longing. Ultimately, this study on longing aims to cultivate mutual understanding—longing emerges from a perceived gap in our identities, and to know what someone longs for is to witness the lesser seen parts of their being.
The Head is not the Star of the Body will run for 4 nights for the culmination of my Dancemakers Residency at the Boston Center for the Arts from May 8–11, 2025. This project is primarily supported through the generous support of the BCA’s Dancemakers Residency, in addition to project support by Movement Arts Creation Studio. Previous iterations of this project have been supported in part by the Boston Foundation’s Next Steps for Boston Dance grant, the New England Foundation for the Arts’ New England Dance Fund, the BCA Dance Lab residency, and MIDDAY Movement’s Rough Drafts program.
