Opening Fall 2026, The Green School will nurture boys ages 3–6 through hands-on, nature-based learning and the Montessori philosophy. Our mission is to grow emotionally intelligent, confident, and compassionate young men — starting with the smallest seeds: early childhood.

Planting the Seeds for The Green School

Almost ten years ago, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life — closing my licensed child care home in the city of Wilmington. I had cared for up to twelve children at a time, and many of those families remain close to me to this day. Before closing, I would often say, “When I open my school again, it will be full of wooden toys. The children will learn outdoors. It will feel like home, filled with plants and have special spaces for myself and the children to feel at peace.”

At the time, I didn’t realize I was describing the essence of the Montessori philosophy — a method that honors the child’s natural curiosity, independence, and connection to the environment.

Over the past three years, through my work as the Director of a nonprofit (Teach Zen Inc) that provides social-emotional learning programs to schools and child care centers, I’ve spent a lot of time inside classrooms — especially in Wilmington zip codes. What I saw broke my heart: the number of times young Black boys were being moved from one program to another in a single school year. Many were labeled as having “behavioral issues,” and I saw first hand how each facility would struggle to give each child what they needed to thrive.

In reflection, I’ve realized something profound. For years, I noticed I always had more boys enrolled in my child care program — and I used to see that as a challenge. But now, I understand it was a calling. I was being prepared to study, nurture, and uplift the ways boys learn, feel, and grow.

This realization is the seed that grew into The Green School — Delaware’s first Montessori School for Boys.

Our Vision

The Green School will be a mindfulness-based, nature-centered Montessori environment where young boys can thrive — socially, emotionally, and academically.

Our days will begin with uninterrupted work time indoors — where boys explore hands-on Montessori materials that encourage focus, independence, and confidence. Afternoons will be dedicated to outdoor learning, where they’ll garden, explore, build, and connect with the natural world. Every day will be balanced between mind, body, and heart — cultivating peace, curiosity, and purpose.

We believe when boys are given space to move, breathe, and create freely, they grow into compassionate, capable young men who contribute positively to their communities.

Why We’re Raising Funds

The Green School is opening in Fall 2026 with the support of the Wildflower Foundation, a national network that has helped open over 70 Montessori programs across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
