The Goode Fight Against Cancer

My mother, Karen Goode, was taken to the hospital early Saturday morning on April 25 after she began to lose the ability to communicate or respond.   Doctors discovered that she had suffered a severe stroke and has a hemorrhage in her brain that is causing cranial pressure.  Unfortunately, they are unable to operate due to her extremely unstable condition.  We are currently unable to see her due to the hospital being locked down in response to the Corona virus, but we are working with healthcare providers to try and set up in-home hospice care, so we can at least be with her in her last days. This unfortunate story began in December of 2019 when my dear mother went to the hospital with severe abdominal pain, and doctors then discovered a large mass in her lower abdomen roughly the size of a fist.  She was immediately scheduled for surgery and underwent an invasive, exploratory surgery the week before Christmas. The surgeon removed the large mass along with most of her large intestine.  He also discovered that the cancer had spread to her kidneys and was also around the blood vessels that sustain the stomach and small intestines, making some of it impossible to remove.  Further testing discovered that the cancer had spread to the liver and lymphatic system as well, confirming that she has stage 4, aggressive cancer. We were left with little choice but to begin a series of chemo treatments as soon as she recovered from the surgery.  The cancer had been causing digestive issues which had caused her body weight to drop below 100 lbs, making her even more vulnerable to complications from chemo treatment. Working with doctors, my parents made the decision to relocate to Tucson, Arizona for cancer treatment.  The same town where they were married 40 years ago, in the fall of 1980.  Karen began receiving weekly chemo treatments to stop the cancer from advancing.  I managed to find them a small apartment where they have been very happy and comfortable while my mom has fought for her life.  I visited as often as I could to help support them, and things were looking hopeful, until she began receiving the second round of chemo.  The second round of chemo was more intense, and the side-effects have caused her to drop weight quickly, as low as 78 pounds.   We don't know what tomorrow holds or how long she has at this time, but we are humbly asking for donations of any size as every dollar helps with the rapidly mounting medical bills, hospice and sadly the funeral costs to come. If you cannot help financially, please help support Karen spiritually with your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes.  I will try to update everyone about my mom's progress, at this point we are just trying to provide her with the best love and care that we can give.   At this moment, she is at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson and is stable but minimally responsive. Thank you for your support! May god bless and keep you all during this trying time.
