In LONG:
I've been working as a full-time public school teacher in Oakland for almost 4 years. Two years ago I started the process of becoming credentialed as well as completing a Master's program in Elementary Education at San Francisco State University. I'm currently ready to complete my last semester and graduate this spring.
I'm proud to serve Oakland, working with families of diverse backgrounds, but especially those of my African-American/diaspora background. I am humbled to be a male, African-American teacher as we are well underrepresented.
My family, my wife and our two children, have made many sacrifices to continue this journey including me living away from our home in Sacramento for the week. I have also lived out of my car for the whole first half of the school year to avoid paying exorbitant renting rates here in the Bay.
The fact is, I need help from my community: Muslims, fellow teachers, families, and advocates for quality education. I am aware of how this capitalist system puts strain on everyone while we try to meet our family's immediate needs, pay our bills, and plan for a future for ourselves and children.
I am asking for donations to be able to enroll in school this semester. Normally, my family would be taking the burden through financial aid, but I'm in an unfortunate circumstance. Last semester, I was advised to drop one of my two classes (my field study) to be able to better focus. This delayed my graduation, but I agreed as I wanted to be able to give adequate focus to my research. Me pursuing my master's has not been only about salary increase, but investing in my education as a teacher. I have benefited so much already from working with experienced (and new) teachers at SFSU, and plan to continue doing so. Anyway, when I dropped the course, I became ineligible for financial aid and responsible for my tuition for that semester... which I was completely unaware of until of the end of it. I currently owe about $3000. I need to get this paid by February 15th. All money raised will be applied to tuition and fees.
In donating, you will be supporting a public school teacher committed to serving underserved and disadvantaged children. You are investing in public education in a field where retention as well as teaching the pursuit of knowledge are serious problems.
My research is around building confidence and community in math learning where I'll be working with my 3rd class of diverse learners. I have high hopes about this research not only helping me, but the students I work directly with everyday at school.
As you known there is no donation too small. I appreciate you taking the time to read this and hope you will consider helping this cause.
In SHORT:
I'm an Oakland public school teacher in need of help with overdue tuition fees from my credential and Master's program. I'm scheduled to complete my last semester, but cannot register. I'm raising $3000 to pay directly in tuition fees by the last add date of February 15th. I appreciate anything you can contribute in this short time frame to get me enrolled and on the road to graduation.
May you all be blessed and fortunate in your sustenance, your families, and your time.
