The Girl and the Water Carrier, puppet production

Donation protected
What do Yiddish comedy, hip hop, puppetry, and a story about love during a pandemic have in common? They’re the main ingredients in The Girl and the Water Carrier, a traveling puppet theater production for families with children in grades K-5.

The 40-minute musical is set during a cholera epidemic in the shtetl of Pinsk. Blending live acting and large-scale puppetry, the show speaks to contemporary audiences in their language about subjects such as the pandemic, helping those most in need, female empowerment, and the values we look for in friends and ultimately partners.

Puppetry contrasts starkly with our digital lives and, coupled with accompanying puppet-making workshops, the show inspires young audiences to build their own imaginative responses to our troubled world. The landscape of culture and entertainment for youth is starved for positive values and conversations about the socio-emotional topics that this experience provides.

These funds will be used to get the show off the ground- including materials for the set and puppetry as well as personnel costs for the four-person artistic team. We will begin bringing the show to venues -theatres, schools, festivals, libraries, etc.- in Los Angeles and beyond starting in April 2023. Without this money, the show and workshops will not get in front of any audience.

We thank you for your support and hope you can also envision what an immense impact you can have on our sharing of this program.
