I believe in hard work. I believe in fierce self-sufficiency. I believe in the virtue of taking care of my own needs, wants, and life, in not being reliant on anyone but my self.

But a friend reminded me I also believe in community, in kinship, in being there for those I love. And that THAT is a two-way street.

So here I am, starting a Go Fund Me, one of the most difficult things I've done in a while (and I've had to do some very difficult things this year).

Last year I developed cataracts which, in a matter of months, have resulted in a 90% loss of vision acuity. Blindness is not compatible with the life and career path I was on in wonderful New Orleans, and Louisiana is not kind to the under-resourced.

With support from family (blood and chosen) I've moved to Colorado, where I still hold residence, and will have double-cataract surgery in February (pre-op appointment on the 8th), thanks to the State's comprehensive social services and resident care programs.

The operation will be mostly covered; however between now and the surgery date, I am unable to work (because I am blind), and for 4-6 weeks after, I will not be able to do anything physical as my eyes heal and recover.

Not being able to provide for myself is frightening to the point of tears. I have fought vulnerability and victim-hood all my life.

My friend reminds me I've also always lived with an outstretched hand to those in need around me, sharing what I had.
