The Gift of a Laptop For Two Bright Ghanaian Students
Donation protected
I have made two service trips to Ghana with an amazing organization called Dream Volunteers (DV). In much of Ghana, including the Weija region where I was, it is too expensive for many families to send their kids to high school and college. Many bright, hard-working, motivated young people would give anything to continue their education, but if their families cannot afford it, their formal schooling ends after middle school. They go into menial jobs to help support their families. These young people continue in a cycle of poverty, and can become hopeless. Dream Volunteers believes every child deserves access to the education they want to pursue. DV committees in the U.S. and in Ghana identify young Ghanaians who have demonstrated dedication and a desire to continue their educations, have maintained good grades and attendance, and have been recommended by a pastor or community member, can apply for scholarships to continue on to high school and college. If the student is selected, their tuition will be paid by Dream Volunteers. The gratitude these young people and their families display is overwhelming. There are still things outside of tuition that are not covered, however, like personal computers. This means the students must wait to use one of the limited number of computers at the school to do their research and complete assignments. They find ways to get it done, but it’s not easy. Some students find part-time jobs in between terms to earn money for things like PCs and public transportation.
I am trying to raise enough money to purchase at least two refurbished laptops for two of our scholarship students working toward their bachelors degrees. It is prohibitively expensive to send them from the U.S., so they will be purchased by the DV team in Ghana. A decent used laptop in Ghana will cost about $300.
There are so many worthy causes on the GoFundMe site. If this one speaks to you, we would be grateful for a donation of any amount. Many thanks!
