We’re photographing a follow up book: Portraits of Transgender Children, 2003-2026. How did the Dutch children that I portrayed in my first book 'Inside Out' continue their journey to a new identity? Did they find the happiness they were seeking?

This is an urgent project as the waiting lists for medical treatment are just getting longer, and this has serious consequences for the well-being of these children.

If you would like to contribute to this important art project, I invite you to support this unique project. 'The Follow Up Season 2026. This season is about creating a visual story that is free from tragedy and trauma. The heart of the art project is celebration and authenticity.

I have been taking photographs of Dutch transgender children since 2003. All of the girls in the photos were born as males and vice versa. As a photographer I was approached by their parents and asked to give their children a face. The first publication of these images appeared in the Volkskrant Magazine. These were the very first public images of these children in the world. I followed the children for a period of seven years, which resulted in the photobook 'Inside Out, Portraits of cross gender children’ published in 2010. The portraits were subsequently published in the New York Times, Huffington Post, Le Monde and Die Zeit, and other media, which made it evident that the whole world was watching us. In 2015 the portraits went viral via international media. Shortly after that our portraits appeared on the cover of the medical journal Scientific American. After all, a picture speaks a thousand words.

In the summer of 2018, we started The Follow Up project: Inner Garden. Did the children find the happiness they were seeking? The young pioneers from back then are today's gender ambassadors, and they raise an important sociological theme in society in the field of gender diversity. We always had more than just two flavors, and the new generation refers to itself as gender exploring. What appeals to me as a photographer and what I want to capture with my large format camera on film is the purity of these children. To raise awareness, we're portraying the follow-up of their gender quest in a colorful floral landscape full of butterflies.

The project is urgent. Now that hospital waiting lists for medical care for transgender children have become even longer, dozens of boys and girls are unable to start their hormone treatment on time. This has serious consequences for their gender development.

A parent: "This follow-up is very important because the story continues, just like the children's development into adulthood. It's good to record this in this special way once again for society!"

Young transgender person: "At this moment we definitely need more straight allies to make us feel safe again."

To finance the follow-up, I have set up this crowdfunding campaign with our ambassador, doctor and transgender coach, Kim Horsnell. Considering the sensitivity and vulnerability of this project, in the past 23 years, we have never promoted ourselves via the established art institutes. The images will once again inspire society to take a destigmatizing look at gender diversity, and with your support, we can create this latest Follow Up 2022 together.

With this crowdfunding campaign, we will be able to cover the cost of the photoshoots, which are all done with a large-format camera and 4x5" film. We need € 25,000 for this project. After that, we will be able to use the new portraits to create the Follow Up Book and a special 2003-2026 traveling exhibition that will be shown at teaching hospitals a.o. GENDER DIVERSITEIT 2003-2026

Wil jij bijdragen aan een bewuste samenleving op het gebied van genderdiversiteit? Hoe is het de Nederlandse kinderen uit het eerste boek vergaan op hun reis naar een nieuwe identiteit? Hebben ze het geluk gevonden waarnaar ze op zoek waren? Het project heeft urgentie omdat wachttijden voor medische behandeling steeds verder oplopen. Dit heeft ingrijpende gevolgen voor deze kinderen.

Als je een bijdrage wilt leveren aan dit belangrijke kunstproject, nodig ik je uit om dit unieke project te steunen. 'The Follow Up' seizoen 2026 draait om het creëren van een visueel verhaal dat vrij is van tragedie en trauma. De kern van het kunstproject wordt gevormd door het vieren van authenticiteit.

Sinds 2003 fotografeer ik Nederlandse transgender kinderen. Alle meisjes in de foto’s zijn geboren jongens en vice versa. Als fotograaf werd ik door de ouders benaderd om hun kinderen een gezicht te geven. De eerste publicatie stond in het Volkskrant Magazine en toonde de allereerste officiële beelden van deze kinderen ter wereld. Zeven jaar lang volgde ik de kinderen voor het fotoboek: ‘Inside Out, Portraits of cross gender children’ dat in 2010 verscheen. Vervolgens werden de portretten gepubliceerd onder andere in de NYT, Huffington Post, Le Monde, Die Zeit. Zo keek de hele wereld met ons mee. In 2015 gingen de portretten viral via internationale media. Vlak daarna stonden we met onze portretten op de cover van het medische tijdschrift Scientific American. Eén beeld zegt immers méér dan duizend woorden.

Zes jaar na de laatste beelden, in de zomer van 2018 vervolgen we het kunstproject met de Follow Up. Hebben de kinderen het geluk gevonden waarnaar ze op zoek waren? De jonge pioniers van toen, zijn de gender-ambassadeurs van nu en zij snijden een belangrijk sociologisch thema aan in de samenleving op het gebied van gender-diversiteit. Er zijn inmiddels meer dan twee smaakjes, en de nieuwe generatie noemt zich gender-exploring. Wat mij als fotograaf aanspreekt is de puurheid van deze kinderen. Zij zijn een mooi voorbeeld van een wereld in transformatie. Die energie wil ik vastleggen met de analoge 4x5 camera.

Het project heeft urgentie. De follow-up wordt jaarlijks gefotografeerd om steeds opnieuw bewustzijn te creëren. De wachttijden voor transgender kinderen zijn in ziekenhuizen steeds langer geworden. Dit betekent dat tientallen jongens en meisjes niet op tijd aan de noodzakelijke hormonale behandeling kunnen beginnen, wat ingrijpende gevolgen heeft voor hun fysieke ontwikkeling.

Met deze crowdfunding kunnen we de kostbare analoge fotoshoots financieren en produceren. Voor dit traject hebben we € 25.000 nodig. Daarna kunnen we met de nieuwe portretten het vervolgboek maken en een reizende overzichtsexpositie 2003-2026 die o.a. in academische ziekenhuizen te zien zal zijn. Onze grote dank voor je bijdrage!
