The First 72 Food Pantry - Help Fuel Fresh Starts!

Tax deductible
When clients first return home, one of the first things that we do is assist them in applications to public benefits, including the DCFS’ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. However, SNAP can take 3-4 weeks from application to approval. During that gap, our clients face few affordable or practical food options.

Just today, a client came in to do an interview over the phone with DCFS. This interview is required of all people to receive benefits, however, many of our clients do not have a phone or reliable form of transportation to use our phone. It takes about a week to reschedule a phone interview with DCFS, widening the gap of time someone is without food assistance. And with stricter work requirements on welfare programs, even fewer people will be able to get the resources they need. Clients are already juggling housing searches, job applications, and the challenges of reentry. No one should have to choose between paying rent or feeding themselves.

That’s where the First 72+ Food Pantry steps in: to bridge those “in‑between” weeks with immediate, accessible nourishment. Thanks to the generosity of our partners and community members, we’ve been able to relaunch this essential service this year. While canned goods are still welcome, we’re focused on building a more sustainable system – using monetary donations to stock ready‑to‑eat meals, fresh produce, protein bars, and other shelf‑stable foods that require no can opener or microwave.

Every dollar you give ensures someone in reentry won’t go hungry during those crucial first weeks home. Thanks for your support!
