The Feral 4 Have Come So Far — Help Them Take the Final Step

I’m Melissa, and for many years I worked in animal rescue. A few years ago, I stepped back from my last official rescue position—but rescue never really leaves your heart, ever.

The four little souls in the photo—(from L to R) Freddie, Sweet P, Stella, and Ari—are who I lovingly call the “Feral 4.”
Their story began in a heartbreaking hoarding situation with 125 dogs, all living without proper care. They received no human touch, no comfort, no routine—just occasional glimpses of an elderly man who was himself very ill. When he could no longer care for himself, the dogs were discovered, terrified and fending for survival.

The rescue effort was frantic. People everywhere. Crates, nets, strangers, chaos.
Some dogs adjusted quickly once in rescues or foster homes. But several, especially the most fearful, were labeled “aggressive” simply because they didn’t understand what was happening to them. Tools meant to “manage” them only worsened their terror.

And that’s how these four ended up very close to euthanasia.

I stepped in because, from working with other ferals and many very scared dogs, I knew it certainly wasn’t aggression.
It was trauma—deep, profound trauma.

I agreed to take them in, work with them for a year, and then rehome them.
That was over three years ago.
And in that time, I have witnessed tiny miracles:

• The day—five months in—when they finally looked at my face instead of watching my hands in fear.
• The first tail wag.
• The first treat was taken gently from my fingers.
• The first moment they approached me without shrinking away.

Progress has been slow, but it has been beautiful.

Unfortunately, life has thrown us a curveball I cannot fix alone.
The farm where I rent is going on the market, and I have to move soon. Finding a place with eight dogs in tow is hard enough, but the Feral 4 need more than I can provide now...a calm home or a rescue with a strong foster program to continue healing and learning that humans are ok.

Before they can safely be placed, they need updated vaccines, exams, and—most urgently—some dental surgeries. Years of poor nutrition before their rescue left them with broken, misaligned, or damaged teeth. Stella has a tooth that grew in sideways and created heavy scar tissue. Sweet P has deformities in her canines. All four need professional dental work, likely including extractions.

We only have a couple of months, and I don’t have the time to slowly save up for these necessary procedures. The estimate for vaccines and exams is $200 per dog, and dental work typically ranges from $800–$1,000+ each, depending on severity. Our vet cannot give a more definitive price until they are seen. (and when I do get written estimates, I will add them)

Because of this, I’m setting our fundraising goal at $4,500.

I’m trying to do everything in one visit to minimize their stress. They’ve come so far, and I want their next home—whether foster or forever—to focus on love and trust, not on medical needs I should have taken care of before they leave.

If you can help, in any amount, you’re not just helping four dogs—you’re helping four hearts that have fought so hard to trust again.
And we will keep updating as we move forward.

Thank you for reading their story, for caring, and for giving them a chance at the life they were denied for so long.
