the eye-I of the beholder

Donation protected
Portland artist and teacher, John Early, has his eye on publishing his memoir about a life of seeing and drawing. Now in the late stages of Parkinsons, John’s friends and family have assisted him in creating a book of his never-before exhibited work. The Eye/I of the Beholder contains 200 pages filled with full color reproductions in a variety of mediums from ink to glowing pastels. This is a collection of art with a unique perspective and the exploration of ideas, such as “When was the artist’s eye born in me?” And “How to find expansiveness through limitations?”

The Eye/I of the Beholder is organized around six genres: landscape, still life, portraiture, figurative work, examinations of the masters, and the elusive quest to capture the form of fire. John’s drawings and stories about each of these themes lead the reader on a journey through his creative life. John felt compelled to share these stories out of gratitude for the illuminations that inspired and informed his work. With this series of free verse poems, lyrical and humorous, he sincerely and warmly hopes to encourage us all to behold the life before us.

Your help and support can make his vision possible. All contributions are welcome and much appreciated. $25K will cover the cost of a limited edition of 500 books.

Books are beings.
They have a life of their own. Throughout my life, certain books have been guides, teachers, friends, and consultants. I intend for this book to be a guide, a teacher, a friend, and consultant. You can help me plant these book seeds for future beholders…donate a copy to a library of your choice.
