More than 40 000 wildlife species are threatened with extinction.
The extinction of species is an ongoing acceleration process, and researchers in the field say that we are today in the middle of the 6th major extinction event since the emergence of life on earth. According to the Red List from IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), more than 40 000 species are threatened with extinction. 26% of all known mammal species are threatened with extinction. For birds and
amphibians, the percentage is 13% and 41%. Read more about the Red List: https://www.iucnredlist.org
The extinction of species contains severe consequences.
The scientific world considers the loss of biodiversity an equally grave threat to our society and human life on earth. The extinction of species also contains another, more emotionally severe consequence. The species that go are lost to all future generations. They are reduced to stories, maybe pictures and film clips, but coming generations will never have the opportunity to see these animals as they were when they walked on earth.
The ETC Wildlife Taxidermy Foundation is a way to use taxidermy to help remedy the consequences of extinction.
Sadly, zoos are the only safe home for some of the world's most endangered species. When these species
die a natural death, they represent a unique value in the sense that they must be saved to ensure
that the coming generations have an opportunity to learn about and get familiar with the species.
It's critical that society has professional and skilled taxidermists that can preserve threatened species.
Society needs skilled taxidermists that can preserve extinct or almost extinct species in the wild in a way they looked like when alive. We owe this to future generations. The ETC® Wildlife Taxidermy Foundation supports the members of the 'European Association of Zoos and Aquria (AÈAZ) in their efforts to preserve the most endangered wildlife species for future generations through 'state-of-the-art' taxidermy. ETC® is providing sourcing, selection and funding of Awarded taxidermists for this critical work:
• Sourcing and selection of the best ETC® Awarded taxidermists for the taxidermy work to be performed for mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
• Covering the cost for the taxidermy work performed by ETC® Awarded taxidermists
Spectacular Taxidermy Show with media coverage
The taxidermists will perform some of the taxidermy work for threatened species during the event "European Taxidermy Championships ETC®". The ETC® is organized every 2nd year (the next one is in February 2023), where taxidermists meet to compete and learn about new technology, material, and processes in taxidermy. See videos from Salzburg 2018 and Budapest 2021
Here the public can experience and get close to the magic where Awarded taxidermists transform 'skins and feathers' into beautiful taxidermy mounts. We will invite the relevant media to cover the event (TV Channels, magazines and other) to maximize the publicity about what the taxidermy community do to help preserve threatened species.
The sourcing and selection of the taxidermists is done by the ETC® Management and Advisory Board.
