The goal for this go fund me in short is:
* Help get Brandon back to school to finish his degree
* Help assist in heavy out of pocket payments from doctor visits
* Help get Brandon the proper physical therapy needed
* Help a young family get back on their feet.
An accident from three years ago still affects them daily and they need help. Below is a short explanation. Read further for more details on the situation if you are not familiar with who Brandon and Kelsey are and what they have endured.
We understand that $35,000 is a lot, and we do not expect to raise it all, but Brandon’s credit score has plummeted because of the accident and does not qualify for any loans of any kind. This means that all his schooling will need to be paid out of pocket and all his future medical visits will be out of pocket, and these visits will continue on for the rest of his life.
Part 1:
As most of you know, Brandon, my brother-in-law, and Kelsey, my sister, were in a serious car accident almost three years ago. It has been a long, lonely three years for them. They have finally given me permission to ask for help on their behalf. They have put on a brave, optimistic front for years and they are not a couple that likes to ask for help. This is a huge step towards getting them back on their feet. Although Brandon will eventually be filing for bankruptcy due to such a large amount of debt from medical bills; it would be great to raise enough money to get him back to school, and to pay off some bills that need taken care of now. Due to his arm breaking multiple times and with now having three surgeries, it’s been tough finding a job that doesn’t require any strain in his arm which still has a strict lifting restriction on it by his doctor. Brandon’s financial assistance has also expired which means future doctors appointments are hefty out of pocket payments with every visit.
Any bit you can give to lessen their load would be greatly appreciated. Sharing this page is also beneficial so more people become aware and might be able to help. Please continue reading for more details about what happened and what has brought them to the situation they are currently in.
Part 2:
January 1, 2020 will mark three years. These past three years have been filled with a lot of suffering for my brother-in-law. Many know, but for those who do not....Brandon and Kelsey and their dog Lily were struck head-on by an uninsured driver that night. Lily had to be put down almost immediately after the accident. Kelsey was conscious for the whole accident and ended up being transported in a mobile ICU where she had internal bleeding which resulted in the removal of 6” of her intestines and a shattered elbow. She still struggles with PTSD from the things she saw that night. First responders believed Brandon was dead, but somehow he miraculously lived. Brandon is 6’ 6” and 325lbs. The only reason he is alive is because of the body God gifted him with. Careflight took him to Miami Valley and it was found that he had a broken femur and humorous. After a week in the hospital he was still unable to walk. They then realized he had also ruptured his patellar tendon. He now was bedridden in the hospital for the next month. This meant he would not be able to return for classes at Ohio State and as a result; lost his insurance too.
Brandon’s (dominant) arm did not heal correctly. The metals plates in his arm broke once, and broke again later that year; resulting in a second surgery to fix it. When recovering from this surgery he decided to try and go back to classes at Ohio State. However, it was still too soon and too much to try and take back on. The screws in his arm once again broke and he had to get a third surgery. That third surgery was June 5th, 2019. As of now; the third surgery looks promising. However, there are still many struggles. Six months out of surgery, and his doctor has said he will most likely not say he’s healed until two years down the road. Imagine all you’ve done in the past three years...I met my now husband, got married and have had my first child. In that same time period Brandon’s life has been put on pause as he’s been trying to recover. He puts on a good front, but the struggle behind closed doors has been very real and very hard and lonely. He has not been able to run for three years. He has not been able to use his dominant arm for three years. He is constantly being rejected for jobs due to his physical restrictions. Three years...and two more still ahead of him. Think about that.
People ask why he didn’t sue or go to court and after meeting with many lawyers; all have come back with the same answer. There’s no point. The driver that hit him was uninsured and worth nothing. There is no justice for Brandon and Kelsey in this situation and that is a hard pill to swallow. They did nothing wrong and are the ones who suffer. Brandon will file for medical bankruptcy this next year which will erase his medical bills which are climbing toward $1,000,000. However, it will not cover his future medical bills or help with basic living expenses as he has been unable to hold a job or work due to his physical limitations.
I am amazed at how positive Brandon has remained over these three years. I do not know how he does it, but I know he has bad days too. He lost a large portion of his identity (strong, independent, athletic) that day... to no fault of his own. He has had to do more soul searching at the age of 23 (at the time) then most of us will ever have to do. He’s been slowly picking up the pieces by himself and trying to discover who he is without identifying as the strong, independent, athletic male he always was. People look at his body build, and do not see the almost two foot scar on the back of his arm that handicaps him everyday. Strangers will not hesitate to ask for his help to lift or move something, and he has to decline in order to protect himself. Little things like this leave a pain in his heart because he is always willing to be a helping hand and physically can’t. We know as a family that money will not fix the problem, but it will help to lessen the burden a tiny bit and help him continue to move forward with life and recovery.
Thank you for taking time out of your day to read about their story, it is greatly appreciated.
