Rachel and Stephen Engels, my sister and brother-in-law, along with their two children, are in need of support. They have lived in the Los Angeles area for over a decade. Rachel is a dedicated and talented therapist, and Stephen has been working tirelessly as a production coordinator in the TV and film industry. Each of them has seen their work as service to their community and they have poured into the lives of those around them in countless ways.
However, the film and TV industry has changed drastically over the years, and the lengthy strikes and industry contraction of the past 2 years especially have taken a significant financial toll on their family. More recently, they were forced to evacuate their rental home due to the LA fires (Eaton was very close to their home). While their home remains standing, their community is still grappling with the aftermath, with unsafe air quality and toxic cleanup efforts that will take months, if not years. At the same time that they were evacuated, Steve's mother experienced a sudden health scare, adding to the ongoing list of challenges.
Given these circumstances, they have decided that the best choice is to relocate to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to be closer to Steve’s mom and start a new chapter for their family. They plan to move in early April, but the cost of relocating is significant, especially given the financial and professional hardships they have faced. This includes the fact that almost all of Rachel's clients have had to cancel their scheduled counseling sessions due to logistical or financial disruptions caused by the fire, exacerbating an already difficult situation.
As a family, we want to support them in this transition. Many friends and neighbors have asked how they can help, and right now, the most practical way is by contributing toward their moving and resettlement costs. Any amount you can give to support this precious family would be deeply appreciated. Funds will go directly to them.
