The Embold Project: Educate Black Girls on Natural Hair Care
Donation protected
We are a group of high school girls from Baltimore, Maryland, led by founder Naomi Boldon, dedicated to inspiring Black girls to embrace and love their natural hair—hair that beautifully showcases kinks, curls, coils, and waves. Our empowering project aims to partner with local elementary schools, particularly those with "Black Excellence" clubs, to lead special sessions focused on natural hair education.
In these interactive meetings, we'll explore the essence of natural hair, address societal stigmas associated with it, and emphasize the importance of proper hair care. Our hands-on activities will include testing hair porosity, analyzing heat protection, creating personalized hair products, and practicing new hairstyles on curly-haired dolls. At the end of each session, students will receive a free natural hair kit to kickstart their personal hair care journey.
These kits will be thoughtfully assembled with quality essentials, including:
- shampoos
- conditioners
- curl gels
- mousse
- scrunchies
- satin pillowcases
- curly hair brushes and more
Our motivation stems from our own challenging experiences with natural hair. As young Black girls, we often felt our hair was "abnormal." While others could simply brush their hair and go, we faced hours in front of the mirror, struggling to achieve societal standards of beauty. This led us to adopt harmful techniques that severely damaged our hair, culminating in the "Big Chop"—a common experience among Black girls worldwide, involving cutting off significant portions of damaged hair due to inadequate education on proper care.
Through this project, we aim to combat the need for the Big Chop by introducing young girls to effective and appropriate hair management techniques early on. Our goal is to reach 250 girls across six to eight schools, equipping them with the knowledge, resources, and confidence to proudly embrace their natural hair. By fostering self-love and cultural pride, we hope to create a lasting ripple effect.
How Your Donations Will Be Used
1️⃣ Hair Care Kits for 250 Youth – A large portion of the funds will go toward creating free natural hair care kits filled with essential products like shampoo, conditioner, gel, and silk pillowcases. These kits will provide students with the tools they need to care for their hair confidently.
2️⃣ Hands-On Workshops & Club Meetings – We’re hosting interactive sessions where students can learn hair care techniques using curly-haired dolls, explore DIY natural hair treatments, and build confidence in their natural beauty. Funds will cover supplies like dolls, brushes, styling tools, and natural ingredients.
