Elmore Family ~ The Cancer Chapter
In April, the Elmores heard the crushing words no one wants to hear. “Kate has stage three cancer. There is a germ-cell tumor in her abdomen, connecting to her internal organs and beginning to spread. We need to treat her right away.” Everything stopped.
Since then, Kate has been in the hospital almost as many days as at home, between initial surgery, alarming complications and chemotherapy infusions. She is now settled into a chemo routine of both weekly and intensive 5 day courses requiring inpatient stay. This 17 year old is responding with a steady courage beyond her years. The next stages of treatment are to be determined. There is much waiting, praying and fierce hoping.
Amie has been given the priceless gift of partial paid leave, providing space to be all-in as caregiver and hospital partner for the moment. While this has been needed and wanted for the family, it is temporary amidst lost income and mounting medical bills, right at a time when they were beginning to get their feet on the ground after long financial struggle. The strain has been heavy and the additional toll of a cancer diagnosis is unfathomable.
Remarkably and beautifully, each of the kids continues to dream. Camden is headed to NC State in August to study sports management and finance; Jackson is strongly determined to play travel soccer his junior year and earn himself a college scholarship; and Kate is hopeful to finish senior year, get a passport and study astronomy somewhere in Canada or New Zealand!
Any monies given will support this family as they navigate their immediate needs and prepare for coming months of unknown. Pray alongside them for tender healing, spacious joy and whole-hearted, full life!
