Introducing our first fund to support our production of The Elements of Mutual Aid docuseries, running from Oct 12 to Dec 1! The documentary is a four-part series exploring the narrative and application of mutual aid-based organizing in the so-called U.S. We’re the co-directors, Payton McDonald and Leah Ayer, and this fundraiser is for collecting the talent fees for our amazing list of interviewees.

 

We’re about ready to hit the road to start filming interviews in April, but we need a little support first.

Our series will feature 12 different mutual aid-based projects and 8 individual organizers. The time, energy, and wisdom that these interviewees will be contributing to the film will be substantial so before we set sail, we want to have funds secured to compensate them.

 

Our goal is to provide each of the 12 projects at least $200 and each of the individual organizers at least $100 when we sit down with them for the interviews.

Why should you chip in on this project? Why should you tell your friends to throw down too?

We don’t have a list of projects and organizers committed to being interviewed to show off to you just yet. But please believe us when we tell you that the ones we’re pre-interviewing make for a hard hitting set list of primarily BIPOC folks building the most beautiful and radical alternatives in their communities that we know of. The folks we have already talked to are excited to be part of the project.

 

All that to say, your money is going to supporting decolonial, anti-authoritative, community power-building organizers no matter how good this documentary turns out. (It’s going to be amazing, though, really.)

What if this fundraiser raises more than $3,200?

If we raise more than $3,200 to cover our talent fees ($200 x 12 projects, + $100 x 8 individual organizers), we’ll put the rest of the money into bumping the quality of our film gear up a notch. We have decent enough gear. But a little extra dough would benefit the quality of film in some significant ways. With another $1,000, we could afford a better mic for quality sound and better lenses for more cinematic footage.
