The Earth School: Build Senegal’s future together

COMMUNITY GROUND

In the city of Kafountine (in Senegal), there is only one secondary school. Its learning conditions for over 1,000 students are challenging, and a significant number of children remain without access to quality education. In response, we have created a visionary concept for a school that promotes an exceptional learning environment with the goal of enhancing accessibility and empowering the local community. Currently, with NGO Kakolum, we are actively engaged in fundraising to transform this concept into a reality.

Our project, “Community Ground” presents a new prototype for rural Senegal's public schools. We're introducing a spatial framework that helps the community to gradually construct their own school in multiple phases. This adaptable structure can grow, change, and evolve within its modular design.

This unique construction process will train and empower the community members with a sense of pride and ownership. This village-like school not only serves as a platform for education but also enhances the overall community life.

Design + Sustainability

The school has courtyards, a spacious playground, and a community garden. This arrangement encourages outdoor student activities and community gatherings like markets and festivals. The school functions as a local learning center for horticulture, landscape design, and gardening. The building's layout is designed to safeguard existing trees and preserve neighborhood views.

Moreover, the building orientation and roof system are crafted to optimize natural light, ventilation, and rainwater collection for irrigation and sanitation. Solar panels are also integrated to provide lighting and support other educational and communal needs.

Additionally, we are proposing an efficient and sustainable construction strategy. We have adapted earth construction techniques to maximize local and sustainable materials. This material is durable and biodegradable, and its non-toxic nature offers sufficient thermal mass, ensuring excellent thermal performance for the buildings.

The initial phase involves constructing two classrooms, restrooms, and an office, estimating a project cost of $35,000. Your contribution will play an essential role in making this school a reality and leaving a positive impact on the community.

[세네갈 카파운틴에 중학교 짓기]

아프리카 세네갈 동부에 위치한 카파운틴(Kafountine) 시에는 현재 중학교가 단 하나뿐이랍니다. 1,000명정도의 학생들만이 하나뿐인 열악한 학교에서 공부하고, 다른 상당수의 어린이들은 양질의 교육을 받지 못하고 있습니다. 이 도시에 교육에 접근성을 높이고 지역 사회에 힘을 실어주는 것을 목표로, 저희는 더 나은 학습 환경을 장려하는 학교에 대한 비전을 설계하였습니다. 어려운 시기에 세네갈에 공립학교 짓는 프로그램을 운영하는 비영리단체인 카코럼(Kakolum)과 함께 이 의미있는 비전을 현실로 만들기 위해 모금 활동을 시작하게 되었습니다.

“커뮤니티 그라운드 (Community Ground)" 프로젝트를 통해 저희는 세네갈 공립학교를 위한 새로운 프로토타입 입니다. 아직 학교를 지을 자금을 마련하지 못한 상황을 고려하여 저희는 단계적으로 학교를 지을 수 있도록 돕는 공간 설계를 적용하고 제안하였습니다. 현 프로젝트는 모듈러 구조를 통해 전제적인 계획안 내에서 증축, 변경 및 다양한 공간 이용이 가능하도록 설계되였고 동시에 지역 주민들이 손쉽게 지을수 있도록 디자인되었습니다.

이번 프로젝트에 제시한 사용자가 참여하는 건축 과정은 함께지은 학교에 주인의식을 갖을 수있게 함과 동시에 지역사회 구성원들에게 자부심과 공동체의식을 장려하기 위함입니다. 저희가 디자인한 작지만 마을 같은 학교는 학생들 뿐만 아니라 동네주민들의 교육의 플랫폼 역할을 통해 전반적인 지역사회 생활을 향상시킬것이라 기대합니다.

디자인 + 지속 가능한 건축

학교 곳곳에 배치된 안뜰, 넓은 운동장, 커뮤니티 정원은 학생들의 야외 활동 및 벼룩시장, 마을 축제와 같은 지역 사회 이벤트을 지원하기에 용이합니다. 더불어 원예, 조경 디자인, 정원 가꾸기에 대한 지역 학습 센터의 역할을 하게될 예정입니다. 또 건물의 평면 배치는 기존 나무를 보호하고 주변 경관을 보존하도록 디자인되었습니다.

제시한 건물 방향과 지붕 시스템은 자연 채광, 환기, 우수를 활용 및 깨끗한 물을 공급하는 등에 최적화하도록 설계되어 있습니다. 교실에서 필요한 조명을 제공하고 기타 교육 및 지역 공동체 필요를 충족할 수 있도록 태양광 패널을 각 클러스터마다 배치하였습니다.

효율적이고 지속가능한 시공방안으로, 저희는 현지에서 구할 수 있는 흙을 이용한 건축 기술을 적용하였습니다. 현지 흙을 활용한 건축을 활용하여 경제적이고 생분해성이 있으면서도 내구성이 있고, 재료의 우수한 축열 성능을 통해 쾌적한 공간을 만들도록 하였습니다.

현재 진행되는1차 시공 단계에서는 두개의 교실과 화장실, 한 개 사무실를 짓는 작업이 포함되며, 프로젝트 비용은 약 35,000달러로 예상됩니다. 힘든 시기에 함께해주신 여러분의 관심 갖어주시고 참여에 감사드립니다. 이번 학교 짓기를 통해 아이들의 꿈이 현실이 될것입니다. 이 작은 한걸음이 시작되어 세네갈 지역 사회와 공동체에게 희망이 되고, 큰 힘이 되기를 바랍니다.
