The Duppy’s

Donation protected

Im trying raise money to complete my graphic novel entitled The Duppy's. Which is about Black Americana caricatures (Mammy, Sambo, Jim Crow and Jezebel) who come to life from a curse to take revenge on the city of Tulsa. Revenge for what the town did to the residents of Greenwood & Archer (The Black Wall Street)  on May 31, 1921. Cousins Rasheeda and Stephanie come to Tulsa visiting their  Aunt Cassandra, at the same time this revenge takes place and they discover their own personal ties to The Duppy's and must stop them before innocent lives are taken.

This story is important to me because it tells of a Black History that is hidden. Many of us didn't know about The Tulsa Massacre until The Watchmen made it apart of their storyline last year. Many people also don't know about Red Summers, which began in 1919. Where predominantly Black towns were mobbed by racist  and these black residents were then forced out by violence and killed. Grim history is not what any of us what to accept, especially when you are on the losing team or the aggressor. But it's history that has to be taught and can be taught in different ways, my way is through the graphic novel form.

The funds will be used for the artist, the colorist and the wording.  Artist rates are usually $300-$1000 a page, I want to be able to hire the best artist for this so that the message is clear and  attractive all at once.  A colorist will be needed after the artist does the drawing and their rates can vary but are usually the same as the artist.  Wording rates are a little cheaper in my research I've seen rates of as little as $20 per page, my graphic novel is 30 pages. After that I need to be able to print physical copies and distribute and market. Understanding the process and expense of a comic book has truly made me appreciate them a lot more.

Like millions of us I have lost my job due to the current events of this vicious virus. My job not only terminated the staff but also filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and completely shut down for good. I was hoping to have The Duppy's done in the summer of 2020 but with the obvious it is looking like February/March of 2021.  The support from you would mean a lot to me because this is a unique take on history that I would love to show you all.

I am grateful for all your help I truly am and hope to make my goal and allow you all to see the work.

Thank you all so much!
