Life can change in a moment, as this family knows all too well. Many of you are probably aware that Mike has had shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue for approximately a year. Determining the cause of this illness has been difficult due to the rarity of his condition. Lisa and Mike went to Boston on Tuesday August 27th expecting to have a consult to determine diagnosis and treatment. What was expected to be a one-day trip has turned into an indefinite stay for Mike.
Mike has been diagnosed with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, an extremely rare, chronic disease. He has suffered heart damage as a result of the high pressure in his lungs. The doctors are administering medication with the goal of lowering the pressure in his lungs. The introduction of this drug is a slow process as he must be monitored carefully due to the extreme side effects. Hopefully, once stabilized with the medication, a port will be placed directly to his heart for the ongoing administration of the drug. This will be his life going forward.
Lisa will be trained to administer the medication and assist with the caretaking of Mike. Life has changed drastically for this family and they need our help. Lisa and Mike are extremely hard-working people who are generous in their time and friendship. They have volunteered in our community in many ways; school board, community club, coaching baseball, school field trips to name a few.
Mike normally harvests his own wood for the winter. During the fall season they often can their own vegetables and make jams and jelly. Now they are unsure of how they will heat their home and mange their bills. Lisa is unsure when she will be able to return to work as they are in Boston indefinitely and Mike will need significant caretaking when they return home.
Mike and Lisa devote their lives to providing a loving, stable home for their son Tristan. Tristan is experiencing significant upheaval with the illness of his father and the uncertain future. By providing them with this support we can help to decrease some of the stress that this family is experiencing.
Please consider donating what you can to assist them as they navigate this illness. The money donated will go toward medical costs, home care by medical professionals, general household bills as Lisa is not sure when she will be regularly working again, and replacement of their heat source with oil as the wood stove is no longer a feasible option for heat.
