The Dublin Neurological Institute Frontline Run

The Dublin Neurological Institute 150km Frontline Run

URGENT APPEAL

The DNI is a registered charity where we care for patients with neurological diseases including, Parkinson, Epilepsy , Motor Neuron  Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Headache , Stroke (to name but a few)

It has been a whirlwind 6 weeks here at the Dublin Neurological Institute at the Mater hospital (DNI) (www.neurologicalinstitute.ie). The coronavirus pandemic had turned our operation upside down but our front line staff are truly amazing.

Our ongoing services have continued but, like many charities, our fundraising has been almost completely obliterated and we rely on our fundraising to cover our operating activities. Therefore we need your help, urgently.

The Dublin Neurological Institute has decided to hold a fundraiser run. Our DNI staff members are running this weekend coming to raise much needed funds. Our goal is to run 150km between us all over the course of Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th May.  We will track our run/walk using the free app 'Map My Run'. Anyone who wishes to join us in our run is very welcome.

Background:

The DNI remains open for patient care. We moved our outpatient clinics to telephone / virtual clinics to decrease the risk of infection in patients and staff.  We still see the occasional urgent patient in person, as neurological illness does not stop even in the face of covid-19. Indeed we have seen patients with acute neurological problems due to covid-19. It seems this virus, like the Spanish flu virus of 1918, can attack the nervous system.

The Day Ward continues to look after patients requiring lumbar punctures, infusions, and other neurological therapies. Indeed to assist with the covid-19 crisis we moved the Mater Day ward to the DNI, including patients with non-neurological conditions.

We work closely with the Mater Hospital to deal with this pandemic, treat our patients and to keep people informed on how this crisis is affecting our operation.

Importantly, research and teaching are ongoing including an audit of covid-19 patients with neurological problems.

If you can, we would be very grateful if you could make a donation to the DNI. We have always relied on your generosity and support and more so now than ever. Any amount will be a huge help in this time of crisis and would be a wonderful boost to us and our patients during this horrendous covid-19 outbreak.
