The Dood needs an Operation

Donation protected

The Dood needs an operation. Sadly this is to remove his back leg. He has had an injury on his ankle that will not heal. This has persisted for a number of months and resisted antibiotics. The results of tests show that he has a very hard to treat fungal infection and after consultation with the vet the best solution is amputation. It is drastic but the best way to ensure his good health. The usual treatment crucially requires excision of the affected tissue before medication. This isn't practical because it's his ankle. To use drugs alone would be unpleasant, arduous and unlikely to work.

I have had The Dood for five years now. He is a former feral who fell on hard times. In 2013 he was brought into Birley Moor Vets 4 Pets  with a serious neck abscess. They looked after him for a month, treated his injury and got him back to health. Then they put him on Facebook where I saw him and decided he was the cat for me.

He got his name when I saw him come strolling into the room at Birley Moor and the nurse said "What a dude!" And he is. Dood is a streetwise independent cat. He roams around the neighbourhood where has made lots of friends. He loves people and will stroll up to anyone he sees and greet them with his characteristic plangent miaow "Wanna fuss me? Feed me? Be my friend?"

Mid play

It's my belief that as a feral he didn't do much hunting but made his way as a scavenger, beggar and thief. From the outset it was obvious he had lived in a house before. He knew the rules - and when to break them. Within hours he planted himself to block my view of of the TV to show me he wanted attention. The second day he was with me he escaped and ran off. I was heartbroken and so worried. Twelve hours later he marched back in and went straight for the food bowl. He's still in the habit of going on long walkabouts and worrying me to death. He's not lost - he always knows where he is.

With Quinn, they love each other really!
The Dood is a cat who chases foxes and intimidates dogs. He drives me to distraction with how clever he is at evading visits to the vet. He'll decide it's time for a walkabout so I lock the cat door. That's a warning so he hides. He's good at hiding. Having to be more clever than him keeps me on my toes.

When he wants a fuss he's the cuddliest purriest cat ever. But he's not all good. He can be bitey when something annoys him. When he first came here it sometimes got a bit much. One week I was nipped for not playing with the laser pointer, for not giving him my cheese and for being on the phone. Over time I've trained him and he's trained me. He rarely bites nowadays, he just gives me one of his significant looks!

The money I am hoping to raise will cover the cost of the operation and medication for after care.

Please contribute whatever you can for The Dood. He's a lovely cat and I love him dearly.
