The Derby Family

On Sunday, September 29th, 2019 Ed went in for a MRI due to some dizziness and tingling in his limbs. They found a brain tumor the size of a clementine in the front right lobe near the midline. He was admitted to the hospital and scheduled for surgery Wednesday, October 2nd. They removed as much of the tumor as they could in that surgery and as Ed improved in his recovery he moved to Mary Free Bed to begin his rehab. The family then got the news that the tumor is a malignant stage 4 glioblastoma. That is a type of cancer that originates from the brain cells and is not curable, only treatable. It will re-grow, on average within 12-14 months. It is a terminal condition they can try to slow with radiation and chemo, which he cannot start until his recovery from the brain surgery is further along. Ed was discharged from Mary Free Bed and has been able to continue with appointments at home. Therapy continues to strengthen him from surgery - but it is a slow process, specifically for speech and movement on his left side.

Updates will be given on the CaringBridge page that has been set up for the family (link: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/derbyfamily2). If you would like to make a monetary donation here to help support their family they would appreciate it. They can use those for needs and bills as they come up as they transition from from two full-time incomes to disability and critical care leave through their employers.
