The Story

A short contemporary horror film that takes place in one day following a woman in her early twenties navigating a normal day while also having to cope with increasingly worsening misogyny which manifests as a supernatural figure that stalks her.

Cassie is our strong-willed protagonist who is often overlooked by her male counterparts. She experiences events throughout the day, echoing what a lot of young women go through on a daily basis.

Directors Statement

Our aim is to highlight the troubling nature of misogynistic culture that is still relevant today and forces the audience to confront the ugly realities that exist in our society that are continuously ‘normalised’ and is often deemed as socially acceptable.

The events that are occur in the span of the film I have carefully designed for women to be able to relate to it and see themselves in our protagonist: the storylines have either happened to me or other women I know to create realism to the plot. This film’s intention is to portray uncomfortable shared experiences of both casual and deep-seated misogyny.

The Vision

Our intention for the films visuals is to craft an unsettling and uncomfortable experience that sticks with the viewers and takes them on a journey of discovering the real fears that are paired with womanhood. The Daughters of Silence is driven by its immersive visuals which strive to analyse the true fear of Cassie, our protagonist.

Production designer’s statement:

The introspective subject matter of modern women's issues is piqued when discussing the depth of the main character and the monster she contends with. The gradual way that her intrinsic femininity is consumed by an omniscient supernatural power is something that we incredibly keen to explore.

We have already discussed making the monster almost human but having something about it that feels distinctly off, which I feel is a great way to explore different eras of costuming to assist with the changing of contexts and pushing the meaning of how he is noticeably distinct from normality. Working with the director to establish this creative and experimental look for the monster is a challenge that I am excited to delve into.

With the visuals of the film, we want the world we are creating to look so different to the feel of the film. We want Cassie's environment to be colourful, with its palette to be composed of bright and bold, larger than life colours, for it to embody a soft feminine feel and be fundamentally pretty to look at to juxtapose the unrelenting horrific storyline.

Why Make This Film

Our film is essentially a love letter to feminism and a response to the lack of strong female representation which address issues of misogyny. We don't want to shy away from uncomfortable scenes, which have been written into the script to evoke conversations about these types of topics. The film features escalating inescapable fear with the sexism and horror elements.
