"The Darkling" is a period drama where two childhood friends, on the brink of their farewell, share one last conversation.
Helen, the daughter of an impoverished nobleman, is destined to marry for convenience. After a farewell dinner with her family, she must depart for her future in-laws’ estate, where she will be taken to her wedding. Before leaving her childhood home, Helen manages to speak with her childhood friend Margaret: also the daughter of an impoverished nobleman, who has already married for advantage — and then been widowed.
Helen tries to calm herself, searching for comfort in her friend’s words, but finds none — her fear of the unknown and her longing for the bright days of the past do not leave her. Margaret, too, is far from cheerful: despite the inevitability of what is happening, she wanted to believe that the sacred bond she shares with Helen would remain forever. The two young women part, never having confessed their love for each other.
Why we need your help!
We are a collective of graduate students, and as you may or may not know, short films are often a savvy endeavour. Arguably, most creativity is shown when we are able to execute a lot on a very small budget, which we have done before with our films "White Noise" and "Intercome". However, this is a more ambitious project, and some costs simply cannot be avoided. As it is a period piece, we will need to cover travel to historical sites and pay a fair wage to our costume designer. Please help us execute this vision. Any amount greatly contributes to our goal.
