What are the plans and the costs?

Phase I - Sperm Retrieval: $9,000
  • John plans to have microscopic surgery to harvest tissue June 2022. There is a 50% chance of finding sperm.
  • IF sperm is found, the tissue can be frozen up to six months while Beth begins the IVF process.

Phase II - IVF ($38,000) or Embryo Adoption
  • Option A: IF John’s surgery is successful, the Daniels must be funded and start the IVF process within six months. The IVF process from start to finish is about 8 weeks and costs roughly $27,000. During IVF, Beth will have several rounds of injections that will speed up her egg-producing cycle; the standard cost for these prescriptions is an additional $6,000. After harvesting the eggs, the lab will see if they can grow a few embryos in a Petrie dish. The viable embryos will be transferred to Beth’s body and hopefully implanted. Any remaining viable embryos will go into cryopreservation (long-term freezing) for later transfer. Most fertility clinics provide one year of complimentary cryopreservation.

  • Option B: IF John’s surgery is unsuccessful, the Daniels will pivot and use the raised funds to adopt someone else’s frozen embryo—AKA a “snowflake baby.” We would want the experience of being pregnant. We do not yet know the costs of this process, but they will likely be similar to IVF.

Additionally, the cost to birth the child is roughly $5,000 with their current insurance coverage.

  • Option C: IF both methods are unsuccessful, John and Beth will use the funds to adopt a newborn.

Phase III - Embryo Maintenance and future implantations: ($11,000 minimum)
  • After the initial year, the cost to maintain preservation is $600-$700 per year.
  • Subsequent transfers are about $4,000 per transfer, which require thawing and re-fertilization.
  • There are also birthing costs

John and Beth have a high ethical obligation to care for each viable embryo created, and consequently, this route is more expensive. The Daniels believe God is the author of each unique embryo, and any formation of life is a miracle for which to praise God. Their faith has been a guiding and sustaining factor throughout their entire journey.

FAQs

  • Why the urgency? After age 35, the rate of successful embryo transfers rapidly declines.  Additionally, ovarian health declines with age, and each woman’s ovarian health is unique and unknown until the IVF process begins. The Daniels hope to have a few pregnancies over the next 5 years.

  • How are John and Beth contributing? The Daniels have been contributing greatly to their own cause. Beth has taken on an extra job to contribute to the Daniel Family Fund.  Additionally, they are applying for several fertility grants and finding ways to cut expenses by signing up for fertility prescription discounts.

  • Why not adopt your foster children?  The ultimate goal of foster care is to help biological parents get to a healthy place so they can reunite with their children.  John and Beth want to support that goal as much as possible. In some cases children are unable to reunite with their biological parents.  John and Beth may consider fost-adopt in the future.

  • Are my financial contributions tax deductible?  Unfortunately, your contributions are not tax deductible because we were unable to create a non-profit fast enough. If you have ideas about how to make that happen, contact us!

  • GFM takes out a percentage from my contribution -- can I Venmo you instead? Yes, you can Venmo us at this link .

More about John and Beth
  • John: loves patterns and routines; is a math teacher and Ultimate Frisbee player and coach.
  • Beth: is free-spirited; she loves motorcycles, fishing, loud music, socializing, and plants.
  • Both love: family; hiking; playing Pickleball; game nights with friends; and their well-behaved cat, Shasta. The couple make a great pair: she's always starting new things, and he often finishes or maintains her big projects.

Closing remarks

John and Beth believe every life is valuable. Therefore, they seek to use their influence as teachers and counselors in their workplace and community to nurture each life’s potential and help each life become aware of God’s love for them and their story.
