The D'Andrea Reading initiative: SUPER COMIC GIVEAWAY!

Donation protected
Two years ago, our mother, Karen D’Andrea, and last year, our grandmother, Hazel D’Andrea, passed. To honor their devotion to reading, writing, and education for children, my brother and I had an idea based on something my mother did for us when we were kids. Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money, but my mother used to get us comic books for our good grades on report cards. This made my brother and me motivated not only to read but to get good grades in order to get more. Soon, we graduated to novels and other books, still, of course, loving comic books, but becoming avid readers. Hearing that education struggles and literacy rates are low in Oklahoma, we decided to start the D’Andrea Reading Initiative: SUPER COMIC GIVEAWAY. We feel this is an excellent way to start a program doing the same thing to help kids get back into reading in Oklahoma.

We plan to provide donation boxes to local comic stores throughout Oklahoma, where they will collect donations of comic books and graphic novels to distribute at an event on October 17 at Almonte Library and October 18 at Southern Oaks Library here in Oklahoma City. We have the event set up and ready; now we just need the comics. We have a pretty good standing in the industry and know that we can get several comic stores to join in. All the remaining comic books will be donated to the Metropolitan Library System. This is a great opportunity to help literacy rates and create buzz around reading in Oklahoma.

This is our chance to do something to raise awareness of the child literacy issue we have in Oklahoma and make a difference. Our education system is not making great choices on what needs to be done in our state around this issue, and when our institutions fail us, it’s our responsibility as citizens to try anything we can to help. This is just one small thing we can do to raise the reading level of Oklahoma students in a fun way.

A $2 donation gets 1 comic book for a kid. We plan to hand out 8 per child up to 17 years old at the event. Like we said, any that are left we will donate to the libraries. Our goal is to get over 1,200 kids free comics, a total of 5,000 comics. So if you want to donate or have some comics to donate, you can contact us or donate here.
Thank you in advance and we look forward to making this a normal event in Oklahoma, honor our mother and grandmother, and to do our part for Oklahoma literacy rates.
