The cost of saying goodbye.

To friends and family and whomever this message may reach,

On November 21st, 2021 around noon, the sun was high in the sky, for a moment the clouds had fled and allowed all of it's excellence to beam down on us, if only for a moment. Trees naked in preparation for winters embrace, squirrels working with great urgency, late fall flowers who's existence like our own is so temporary and fragile, all of us , for a moment, felt that familiar warmth of the sun. During this moment of reprieve from falls chill my family and I said goodbye to our mother, Nyawic. She was struggling with many medical conditions, which were exasperated by a stroke that ultimately took her life.

To our family our mom was a pillar, for better or for worse grounding (to the best of her ability) a family wrought from discourse, dissonance and dysfunction. A family all too familiar with the cold ways of reality she acted as a warmth, as a guiding light, as reprieve. As our sun. I cannot imagine being tasked with the responsibility she took on. Hardest job in the world.. But she was a giver, not only to us, but to strangers she also took on as hers. Women born with disabilities that made them incapable of functioning within the bounds of society, she spent more than 15 years working as a caregiver, taking on other peoples children as her own, showing love and care to those discarded by the rest. Shining her light on them.

Around this time about two years ago we said goodbye to our sister, her daughter. That was a stark awakening to the many realities of losing someone you love. Amongst those many costs of saying goodbye, quite frankly, actual cost is one of the larger ones. I believe it is important to be transparent in times like these and all funds raised here here will go toward all costs involved with the burial.  My family and I extend this message asking for whatever is you can give, if not money, then your thoughts and words. Anything helps.

Hers is the story of diaspora
of struggle
of change
of love
of pain
of the unwavering human spirit
She was our mother.

Thank you for time and consideration,
the Hoth family.
