The Consequences of Gentrification?

My name is Bridget Banks and I have lived in Atlanta since December 2012 after the death of my aunt Hattie who owned a home on Lillian Ave. in Adair Park for over thirty years.  After moving into her home, I became primary caregiver for a sister with schizophrenia who has mental and legal challenges.  I am also a single mom of two daughters. Without a college degree and limited income, I have struggled to financially meet all of the responsibilities of taking care of my sister and maintaining an older home that is currently in disrepair as well as keep up with the property taxes.  In the past several years, I have had major repairs, one of which was last year an HVAC replacement at the price of $2500.  Repairs to my home and day to day living while caring for my children have been my priority preventing me from consistently paying my property taxes.
 
I was recently notified that Senate Bill 585 allows businesses like Wellington Real Estate professionals to pay past due taxes and add their service fees holding home owners hostage.  The past due taxes on my house were $1638, but with his fees, I now owe $4738 to be paid in full within 30 days or the house maybe sold at auction rendering me and my daughters homeless.  We have nowhere else to go.
 
I am currently working at O Hern House, a rehabilitation facility making a livable wage which is the most money I have made since relocating to Atlanta.  While I am unable to pay the past due taxes and fees, I have learned the sobering lesson of paying my taxes and now I am able to do so.  I am desperately seeking help from the only community my ten-year-old daughter has ever known.
