The Henry C. Lea Home and School Association (of which I'm an officer) is asking for your help on behalf of the Conde Family- a family of 6 in West Philadelphia who lives just around the corner from their kids' school. Friday morning, July 15, a fire broke out in their apartment. Four family members had already gone to work, but the last two kids were still asleep in bed- the authorities think the fire broke out not long before the kids' alarms were set to go off at 7:30 to wake them for their summer jobs and school camp. The sleeping kids were overwhelmed by smoke, were found unresponsive by first-responders, and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. It's still pending investigation, but it seems the smoke alarms were not functional (in their apartment and those neighboring.) The older brother, Salu, suffered carbon dioxide and monoxide poisoning, and his younger brother, Ousmane, additionally has severe lung damage. He remains in critical condition and unconscious several days later. There is a lot of uncertainty about their son's health, and we anticipate large medical bills. In addition, the family has lost everything in the fire and needs to find new housing asap in a neighborhood with a brutal rental market- and they'll navigate all this with the challenge of being non-native English speakers. They're going to need so much community support emotionally and financially- please contribute if you can, and spread the word to your friends, families and community.
