Let me introduce you to the Coffey Family, Brian, Robin, and their kids Brandon and Macie. The Coffey's are in need of help because two weeks ago, the dad experienced an unexpected illness that has thrown this family for a loop. If you can donate to help them while he heals and adapts to this life changing event that has left him unable to work for an undetermined amount of time as he is dependent on constant medical care, you would not see a family more appreciative of your kindness.
Brian is expected to be unable to work for months... Robin provided home daycare, to a family that has been able to get other people to cover for her, but this leaves them with no work income. They need our help and this is one family that will feel the angel's gifts with every donation to enable them to pay their monthly bills, mortgage, etc. Please help them focus on the healing... by contributing financially.
Here are the details from his wife Robin... it went from bad to worse, with no warning signs:
Brian was having excruciating stomach pains on Tuesday, November 27 and went to ER. They diagnosed him with diabetic ketoacidosis. He received insulin that whole day and night and should have felt a ton better by Wednesday morning. When I got to the hospital that morning he was doubled over in pain and said it had moved to his side. The pain should have been gone! Since the pain was worse, they ran test after test and found nothing. Finally, after having morphine and it not even touching the pain they called in a surgeon for his opinion. He ran another CT scan this time with contrast and saw that part of Brian’s small intestine was bad.
They took him back for surgery and about halfway through the surgery Brandon and I were called in to meet with the surgeon. His news was nothing I’ve ever prepared myself for. We thought it was just going to be a fairly simple procedure and the surgeon came out to tell us he didn’t think Brian was going to make it. When opened him up all he saw was dead intestines, way more than he’d seen on the CT.
The surgeon kept him open with a wound vac until Friday where he went to sew him back up. His thoughts were that Brian was going to maybe only live a very short time because the small intestine is where our nutrients absorbed into our body. If we have no intestine then we can be dehydrated and die of malnutrition.
Thank God, on Friday the dr attempted to take the very small part of what was left of his intestine and connect it to the good part of his colon. He wasn’t sure it was going to work because he was worried he didn’t have enough intestine but God was watching over Brian and gave him another chance! The procedure worked!
Now Brian has to still worry about dehydration and malnutrition but with an IV nutrition and a VERY restricted diet, we know he will live with this life changing event that has left him unable to work as he is dependent on constant medical care.
He was in ICU from 11/27 and sent to a regular room on 12/5 and will get out, hopefully, on 12/13. He will have home health nurses, a dietician and nutritionist, and multiple specialists to help him with short gut syndrome AND Type 2 Diabetes. So he went in with no medical history and will leave with a slew.
