My name is Sydney Sawyer, and I proudly serve as the Cadet Chief Mate for the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Class of 2026. Alongside Training Ship Commander Brendan MacGillivray and Cadet Chief Engineer Ashley Haller, I am leading the effort to raise funds so that our class can continue a long-standing tradition: Rate Boiler Suits for our senior sea term this winter.
For decades, ship rates have received these special boiler suits, each customized with a cadet’s name, nickname, rate position, and a unique design on the back. These suits are more than just uniforms — they are a symbol of hard work, pride, and the bond we share as shipmates. Many alumni continue to wear theirs long after graduation as a reminder of their time at MMA.
In the past, the Academy covered the cost of these suits, but since last year, it has been up to the cadets to raise the funds ourselves. That’s why we are reaching out to family, friends, and supporters of MMA traditions.
Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us honor this tradition and carry it forward to the next generation of cadets. We are truly grateful for your support!
