Cosimo Cavallaro has a long history of working with perishables. The Cheese Wall is his latest art project and admittedly the biggest project of his life. He was inspired to start the Cheese Wall because of the political environment we are living in today. He believes all people  - whether they are on this side of the U.S.-Mexico border or the other- are the same. Cosimo also recognizes that at some point, we all feel like outsiders, so in some way, we can all feel like we’re on the other side of “the wall”.

If it takes a Cheese Wall at the border to make people look at the “wall” in a different way, that’s what Cosimo will create.

Why should I donate?

To help expose the waste in building walls between people.

Who is Cosimo Cavallaro?
Cosimo Cavallaro is a controversial artist who has used perishables for the last 20 years, from covering hotel rooms and the fashion model Twiggy, to creating a chocolate Jesus during Holy Week that caused a national uproar when the Church closed the exhibition down and threatened the artist. His art always overthrows, destroys and undermines an established concept. For more information visit www.cosimocavallaro.com

What is Art Above Ground?
Art Above Ground is a non-profit organization supporting Public Art Installations worldwide that are provocative, interactive, entertaining and above all else: playful. Because of its playful nature, it reaches across borders, cultures and all ages, becoming a valuable catalyst challenging social conventions through art and generating change. Art Above Ground provides a fertile space for creativity. Fore more information visit www.artaboveground.org

When will construction on the Cheese Wall begin?

Construction began on March 25th, 2019 at the U.S.-Mexico border. Currently, there are 30 ft of wall installed. We are hoping to raise enough money to buy another 200 blocks of cheese to start phase 2.

How tall will and wide will the wall be?
Made out of large blocks of expired cheese, the wall is 6-feet high. The length depends on the donations. And that depends on you...

What type of cheese will be used?
Mexican hard Cheese. We are buying the cheese from several fabricators who are storing expired blocks of cheese specifically for this project.

Why waste cheese when people are hungry?
All the cheese that is being used in this project is expired.

Are my donations tax-deductible?
No, not through the GoFundMe donation page. However, you can donate to our nonprofit organization Art Above Ground for a tax-deductible donation. Learn more at www.artaboveground.org.

Are there other ways to get involved?
Yes. You can go to www.cheesewall.com to purchase merchandise like t-shirts, mugs, pillows and more, designed and signed by artist Cosimo Cavallaro.
