The Charlie Selman Award

A  Fundraiser for the Charlie  Project:

Dear beautiful friends, families, sisters, brothers, lovers, cuddlers under the covers and admirers of the amazingly fantastic Charlie Selman.

The 13th of May 2020 will mark 1 year since Charlie left us. In that year Charlie’s friends and family have often gathered to talk about the passion, love and creativity that he instilled in us, asking: how can we share these gifts with the wider community? How can we harness the ‘Charlie-isms’ that made our friend such a prominent person in our lives, and which continue to leave a profound mark on us? Within this question an idea was born, or rather a seed was planted for The Charlie Project.

The Charlie Project is an ongoing invitation for cherishers of Charlie and those who value the courage that it takes to think outside of the box to create, connect and contribute to the greater good in our world.

We are excited to announce that the first branch of the Charlie Project will be:

The Charlie Selman Award.

($2000 per year for 10 years for outstanding Final year projects in Sustainability).

We are currently in discussion with Swinburne University about an award that offers a minimum prize of $2000 to one Swinburne University student who delivers excellence and ingenuity in their final undergraduate year capstone project. We would like the Fund to be dedicated to awarding the most gifted students of Sustainability. It will run for 10 years.

For those who don’t know, Charlie completed his Bachelor of Environmental Science at Swinburne in 2016 and, as you can imagine, he left a lasting impression on his tutors and peers. As a budding scientist  in  sustainability,  Charlie’s  out-of-the-box  thinking,  resourcefulness,  complex  problem solving, and vivacious personality made him perfectly suited to the field, which so desperately needs more people with these qualities.

The sustainability project that Charlie completed in his final year has gone down as one of the best pieces of student research and construction in the history of the Bachelor of Environmental Science at Swinburne. We aim for this award to be an incentive for students to be more like Charlie: explorative, inventive, unabashedly creative, and dedicated.

Charlie endlessly researched the ecological problems that our globe is facing, and always thought about solutions. No problem seemed too big to tackle. He wanted nothing more than to contribute to solving the great problems that we all face, and he knew that sustainability science was one of the most important tools in our collective problem-solving toolkit.

In order to fund the Charlie Selman Award we are reaching out to you - Charlie’s friends, family, classmates, and peers, and any person who was ever inspired or touched by Charlie’s unique and compelling energy.

We are very aware that Covid-19 has affected all of us and, for many of us, it has come on top of the fires. We hope you are safe and being looked after and doing the same for others. Whatever amount you can spare will make all the difference.

We commend this project to you.

With Love,

The Charlie Project Steering Committee
