My name is Lucy, I am a nurse working on an acute admissions ward for patients with cancer at St James Hospital, Leeds.

In January, I taught myself to crochet small hearts, which we give to patients receiving end-of-life care. The idea is that our patients can hold the heart close during their final days, and when the time comes, it can be returned to their family as a keepsake to hold onto and remember their loved one by.

The response from our patients’ families has been incredibly positive. Because of this, I’ve been able to expand the Care Heart Project to the other 7 Oncology and Haematology wards in Leeds, meaning that even more patients and families can benefit from this small gesture during such an incredibly difficult time.

To keep the project going and make it sustainable, we’re raising some funds to cover the materials needed to crochet the hearts and the small bags they are given in.

And this is where my amazing friends - Charlotte, Emily and Tiffany - come in! On 30th August, they will be taking part in the Middlesbrough 10K to raise money for this project.
