The Captain Charles Barr Monument project will create a permanent bronze statue in Scotland commemorating one of the most accomplished yacht racing skippers in history.
Born in Gourock in 1864, Captain Charlie Barr achieved international renown through three consecutive America’s Cup victories in 1899, 1901 and 1903, and through setting a transatlantic record aboard the schooner Atlantic in 1905 that lasted for 100 years! [official monohull race record]
Planning permission has already been granted for the monument in a prominent seafront location in the centre of Barr's home town of Gourock. A stunning backdrop is provided by beautiful views across the deep blue waters of The Clyde and the mountains of The Scottish Highlands beyond.
The project is being led by Barr's descendant Alasdair Purves.
A leading sculptor will create the bronze figure and specialist stonemasons have been appointed for the pedestal. The design draws on neoclassical and Edwardian influences, ensuring a timeless quality that reflects the Gilded Age in which Barr lived, while standing comfortably within its surroundings. Once the funding goal is reached, the project can move directly into production.
