The Cannonballs at DI Globals Kansas City

With much pride and excitement (and a tinge of nervousness), the Cannonballs have qualified for the global Destination Imagination (DI) STEAM-based tournament to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, US, late Spring 2024!

DI is a global non-profit whose mission is to inspire and equip youth to imagine and innovate through the creative process. To qualify, teams of students across the globe compete to solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions to judges at tournaments, culminating in a singular global competition in Kansas City featuring the winning teams from the regional, state and international competitions.

Team Cannonballs is made up of six upper elementary school students in Montgomery County, Maryland (MD). These kids have spent the last six months working on their Technical Challenge - Pinball Superheroes. They have put their heart and soul in to creating a working pinball machine with functional modules and a superhero story to go along with it. In addition to this, they are assessed on an Instant Challenge - a rapid 5-10 minute problem-solving challenge incorporating technical, engineering, improv and related skills.

After placing second at the Maryland Regionals and first at the Maryland State Tournaments, these kids have qualified for the opportunity to showcase their Pinball Superheroes solution and be tested in an Instant Challenge at the Global DI Tournament. Given this is a huge endeavor, they are seeking financial assistance for tournament registration, travel and to transport their pinball machine across the United States.
