The CALMA Community Fund is the primary support for CALMA’s comprehensive and critical community service programs aimed at supporting individuals and families who are unable to access institutional resources. The current crisis created by the COVID-19 virus has further complicated the economic, physical, and psychological circumstances of the people we support. We ask for your contribution to secure the continued operations of the programs listed below.
THE IMMEDIATE: In response to COVID-19, we are focusing our fundraising efforts to address the immediate needs of a small group of Bay Area families. These families were already in vulnerable situations that were recently made worse by the COVID shelter in place orders as they are unable to work or access federal aid. Our aim through this direct response is to ensure that they are able to pay rent and keep a roof over their heads and food in their homes as they weather this unprecedented global crisis.
ONGOING: In addition to our individual family funds, CALMA Community Fund supports our community outreach and education programs.
Community Engagement : Our main goal is to provide support in navigating the complex institutional barriers to fundamental needs such as housing and food security, employment, education, mental and physical health. Our program incorporates long-term, comprehensive and holistic follow up to support breaking cycles of poverty.
Know Your Rights Trainings : These trainings are taught by volunteers in partnership with legal resources, who are well versed in the legal rights of undocumented or otherwise targeted individuals. The goal is to ensure that community members are well versed in their legal rights, are able to advocate for themselves when needed, and know who to reach out to for additional support if approached by police or ICE officials.
Day Laborer Outreach : CALMA’s team of dedicated volunteers travel around the Bay Area and provide educational materials and resources directly to day laborers in our communities. These materials include legal resources, housing and food support, funding, and counseling opportunities for individuals and their families. Recently, our team has distributed masks and hand sanitizer during these meetings to ensure their safety while seeking work.
The Bay Area has a unique community and unrivaled history of activism. We are so honored to be able to stand beside you in offering support to those in need and strengthen our community in the process.
