Having taught English for NGO ‘Heart for Change’ and the Ministry of Education’s program ‘Colombia Bilingüe’, The Bright Kites Foundation was founded by a group of volunteers to inspire and encourage students from public schools in some of the toughest neighbourhoods in Colombia.
We want to give them the opportunity to practice their English skills in a real life context so that when they return to Colombia they are confident enough to apply to university or jobs which they think are out of their reach. Many of these students face daily struggles at home and in their community whether it be drugs, gangs or having to raise younger siblings by themselves. Despite their situation they power through – we are in constant awe of their motivation and enthusiasm.
Our aim is to send three students from schools from lowest strata neighbourhoods in Medellin, Pereira and Cali to study English in a language school in the UK for a month.
The student will become a ‘Language Ambassador’ for their school - they will give a presentation about their time away, bring materials and ideas back with them to school about promoting language learning and they will help decide who will receive the grant the following year. We hope this experience will help students apply for scholarships to study at university or help them secure roles with an English requirement (e.g hospitality & tourism) which are appearing more often in the Colombian job market.
We plan to send one student from each of our schools: I.E Celmira Bueno de Orejuela in Cali, I.E Aquilino Bedoya in Pereira, I.E San Pablo in Medellin in Summer 2019.
This requires fundraising for passport and visa costs, return flights and the language school course (which comes with accommodation, a social programme and food). We would be so grateful for any donation to this cause - this experience would mean the world to these teenagers!
