The Brian Beam Memorial Fund
Donation protected
We are raising funds to construct the Brian Beam Memorial Garden at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in loving memory of Mr. Brian Anthony Beam '20, a student whose life was tragically taken by inoperable brain cancer on Christmas Day 2018. Brian was only 20 years old when he succumbed to glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a most aggressive brain cancer that usually afflicts only those 65 and older.
An exemplary student, Brian was taken from us in the prime of his life. A Nuclear Engineering Major, Brian was enrolled in the Naval ROTC program at RPI and wanted to serve his beloved United States of America. Brian was a true scholar, achieving a 3.9 GPA while at RPI. He touched so many people, as evident by the over 1000 attendees to his visitation and funeral. He will be missed by all who knew him, but we must find comfort in the thought that wherever he is now, we are sure that he is doing great things for others and is perpetually healthy and happy in his new afterlife. We also believe that he will be looking down on us from his heavenly realm and serving as our guardian angel in times of trouble and despair.
His parents, Bob and Lydia Beam, wish to honor him by landscaping the plateau area behind the Walker Laboratories in the form of planting trees, building a fish pond with a waterfall, adding concrete benches, fixing the steps leading up to the plateau and mounting bronze plaques with images of Brian at various locations within the garden that will serve as inspiration for generations of RPI students to come. The garden will also serve to remind us all that even though we have made tremendous advances in curing diseases such as cancer, there remains many deadly afflictions that elude a cure. Visitors to the garden should be reminded that there is an ongoing need for more research in chemistry, biology, medicine, physics, engineering and math in order to find cures for the mostly deadly inoperable cancers such as GBM, and that the cure for these killers may lie within their own minds and imaginations.
