The Boneyard Fire Rebuild
Donation protected
At 5am this morning the sound of a gas canister and bottles exploding woke us from our sleep. The sound of screams and glass breaking filled the air while the night sky was lit up orange around us as we ran from a wall of flames 3 stories high that was completely indescribable to witness. What followed was more than heart break can describe. I watched the fire burning in the eyes of one of my best friends as she watched everything she has worked to build and everything she owns burn to the ground in front of her eyes.
The boneyard was built with the love, sweat and tears of the Ruiz family. Each chair, table, bar and wall was hand crafted. They didn’t just build a bar, restaurant, skate bowl, tattoo studio & skate store… they built a home that gave back to the local community. A place for the skaters, the punks, the rockers, the hippies and for everyone in Puerto. A home built with wood and nails by the hands of Papi Chio, the hard work of everyone’s second Mother Marcella, the amazing restaurant and food menu written and built by chef and sister Timmi and the brain child that ran every day with the love of Bronte.
Today the community came together with a full team of staff, skaters, friends, patrons shovelling dirt and ash for hours to clear the wreckage but sadly almost nothing survived the flames and everything from the restaurant and bar will need to be rebuilt and replaced. Multiple fridges, fryers, the sound system, fully stocking the bar, gates, walls, they’ve got to do it all from the ground up but there was never any question that they wouldn’t be. The staff, patrons and every person who walks through the door are family in this place and we need you to help them now to help rebuild their home.
Whatever you can give we estimate damages to be AUD$30,000 or above to rebuild and with insurance being basically non existent in this part of the world that’s on the shoulders of these people who have just been through an enormous traumatic experience.
Whatever you can donate if you’ve ever skated the bowl, ate a Layla’s burger, had a mezcal or cerveza at this magic place or if you ever want to again please give back to these amazing humans who are trying to support themselves and their beautiful staff who turned tears into laughter, community and love today.
If you’d like to donate help in a different way please feel free to email me (Lydia) on [email redacted] or Bronte on [email redacted]
