The Bob Carlton Scholarship

Donation protected
Bob Carlton passed away in January 2018.

Bob grew up in Coventry in the 1950's. His parents Reg and Nancy ran a post office but, in true baby boomer fashion, Bob's ambitions led him elsewhere. He spent years  'learning the ropes' on stage crews and as a stage manager and eventually gained a place at Hull University to study Theatre.

He was offered a Trainee Director job back at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and immediately made his mark, putting together radical new theatre on a shoestring. Bob was a lifelong socialist and spent his life challenging received ideas of what theatre should be and who it should be for.

He was horrified by rising tuition fees, decreases in social housing and what he perceived as a self-interested campaign against social mobility by the wealthy elites.

In his memory we are creating a maintenance grant to help a working class student studying Theatre, with the associated living costs of further education.

Creating and consuming theatre should not be the preserve of the rich. As the cost of living gets higher, and a culture of unpaid work grows larger, pursuing a career in an uncertain artistic feild can seem impossible for those without the privilege of a financial safety net. In Bob's name we would like to do some small part to change that.

We are still in the very early days of putting together the grant, which will start in 2019. More details to follow.
