The Black Banjo Reclamation Project

Cultural Reclamation through Reparations ~ Cultural Revival Through Community

The Black Banjo Reclamation Project is a vehicle to return instruments of African origin to the descendants of their original makers.

The banjo has been on a diasporic journey the same way that many of us and our bloodlines have been. The legacy of 400 years of colonization, slavery, and white supremacy has resulted in most banjos today being in the hands of white people of European descent, with little thought or solidarity to the people who gave the world its sounds. The Black Banjo Reclamation Project reverses this legacy, building and redistributing donated banjos to Black folks eager to continue their healing path of reconnecting to the land and culture that was historically and traumatically stolen from them. Through our comprehensive program, they also receive group workshops and individual lessons, and the space, time and community foundation for them to thrive in their learning.

We invite support from those who feel called to support the retrieval and revival of roots music education and access. Indeed, one way to conceive of this project is "Banjo Reparations." There has never been an attempt on the part of the U.S. government to pay reparations, therefore, this work still must be done, instead by the power of people. This reparations opportunity is available to all organizations and individuals (particularly people, or organizations run by people, of European descent) who understand the importance of centering Black people within their own struggle for liberation, and the power of reclaiming what has been lost

We are open to receiving support from all who feel called to support the retrivial and revival of roots music education and access. This reparations opportunity is available to all organizations and individuals who understand the importance of centering self determination and the foundations of Black community.  Donating to the BBRP directly funds:

Teacher payments
Space rental for lessons
Banjos (acquisition, building, repair and maintenance)
Educational & promotional materials
Program Director salary (Hannah Mayree)

Our fundraising goal for our first six months is $12,000. Your donations make this program fiscally possible.

Thank you for your support! We honor the work of Black Old Time fiddlers and banjo players through the generations and across the land, the newer generations who keep those flames alive and to those who are expanding the musical reach of the banjo. May these collaborations bring our ancestors and ourselves the peace and joy we deserve while holding Black Liberation at the forefront of our work. Ase.
