Hurricane Helene and the devastating flooding she brought has left the people of Asheville, North Carolina facing immense hardship and an uphill battle to rebuild their lives.
Hello beautiful people, my name is Brianna Bishop (you can call me Bri or Breezy) and I'm here to ask for your help on my kin's behalf. Though I call Boston, MA home, I have immediate family and deep ancestral roots in the mountains of North Carolina. My father's side of the family settled in Appalachia over 300 years ago. Now, they face the unfathomable task of re-establishing some sense of normalcy.
Hurricane Helene struck the region with a vengeance, unleashing torrential rains and powerful landslides/extreme flooding. These forces caused catastrophic damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure across a 600-mile-long corridor. Flash floods full of mountain debris surged through neighborhoods, ripping homes off their foundations, tearing families apart, and leaving an entire town completely submerged and isolated from help. The scale of destruction is truly impossible to comprehend, with entire towns wiped off the map. The recovery process is going to be long and arduous, to put it lightly.
My loved ones are now grappling with the daunting task of salvaging what they can and figuring out how to piece their lives back together amidst the wreckage. The financial burden is immense, as they must find the means to repair or replace damaged property, replace ruined possessions, and cover other essential expenses—all while many have been left without jobs or income due to the widespread disruption. This is where a GoFundMe campaign can make a vital difference, providing a lifeline of support to help my family and others in the region begin the process of rebuilding and reclaiming their lives after this devastating natural disaster.
Every donation, no matter the size, will go a long way in alleviating their hardships and restoring a sense of hope during this challenging time. Help my relatives endure these tests of fortitude and rebuild the mountains they have called home since before the Revolutionary War.
