THE BIG CHOP, a new play by Dorothée Karekezi

Donation protected
Hi there! I’m Dorothée, the one who has the nerves to ask for your money.

WHO DIS?
I am a Belgian artist based in Cork, Ireland. What the hell does that mean? Well, I perform, I write and direct stories that talk to my heart. Also, I’m not very rich because, you know, I'm an artist. I believe in creative practices that are disruptive and reflect the complexities of human experiences. A very fancy way to tell you that I deeply care about what I do.

WHY BOTHER?
Before you close this window and send me a text to tell me how presumptuous I am to think that, in this economy, you would have a penny to spend on my art, allow me to tell you why your donation is important:
  • I have been writing a script for the last couple of months (for the first time in my life!) and my play has quickly been receiving attention: I was selected by The Cork Theatre Collective last month to show a work in progress performance and I have just been selected to present my play in Dublin’s Oldest Newest Theatre, during the 2025 Scene+Heard festival in February (that’s very soon!)
  • My theatre play is a blend of personal storytelling with sketchy comedic elements exploring the journey of self-discovery and empowerment through the lens of the "Big Chop". It tackles identity, social norms and personal growth, showing how something as simple as a haircut can symbolise deep transformation.
  • My objectives are to entertain my audience with my awkward sense of humour, as well as to bring awareness to hair discrimination and texturism. I want to encourage conversations about the self-empowerment and self-acceptance of marginalized people and associate a positive image to afro texture hair.
  • Finally, as a woman of colour, I have been historically excluded from places where my voice and story could be heard and spread to large audiences. This is not a small thing to consider and I bear this privilege with much pride and responsibility.
I would be so grateful if you could support me in this journey.

WHAT FOR?
How would your money be used, you may ask?
  • I’d work with a producer for the coming weeks and until the 2 dates of my show in February
  • I’d work with a dramaturg to help me polish those sentences (English is not my native language, can you tell?)
  • I’d work with a sound/light designer to help me shine bright like a diamond on stage
  • I’d rehearse my play in a studio/theatre at least once before tech day
  • I’d buy a few second-hand furnitures and props to stage my play
  • I’d eat, drink and sleep in a comfortable place during the two days of festival
If I managed to convince you, please consider donating according to your abilities (anything as little as €1 will be appreciated) and help me achieve my audacious goal!

N.B. Any profit made from the donation will go to charity.

Big hug & thank you so much in advance,
Dorothée
