On November 20th, Amber was having numbness on the left side of her body. They consulted with her OB and he recommended they go to the Lakeside Emergency Room. There they did a lot of tests including an MRI of her brain. The MRI showed what they thought was a "small" stroke had occurred. The next day her symptoms progressed to no motor function on her left side, speech difficulty, and facial drooping. After talking with doctors, they made the move to Immanuel to see neurologists there that specialize in stroke care. At Immanuel they did more scans and they determined that she had not suffered a stroke, but she has demyelination of the nerves in her brain (similar to stripping electrical wires). This required more scans, blood draws, and spinal taps for further investigation. They stayed at Immanuel until December 3rd and then sent Amber to Madonna Rehabilitation where she has been receiving at least 3 hours of therapy every day between PT, OT, and speech therapy. She has been progressing well and has regained sensation and movement in her left leg to the point of assisted walking while holding on to a rail or cane. Her speech has come back to almost normal. Her left arm has regained sensation and movement has started to happen. Amber is scheduled to be released from Madonna on January 8th and is looking forward to being back at her house and around her family. She will continue to receive therapy through Madonna on an outpatient basis multiple times per week. Currently there is still no diagnosis, so her doctors in Omaha are working to get Amber referred to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for more testing. There she will be able to work with a team of doctors who will be able to look at her situation from every possible angle.
Amber is a fighter and continues to attack this each and every day. She is extremely dedicated to making progress in her therapy and her determination is inspiring. We organized this page to provide friends and family of the Becker's another avenue to help and support them. They are extremely grateful and feel unbelievably blessed with all of the support they have already received from their family and friends. Please continue to pray for Amber to make a full recovery!
