The Beat Goes On: Hope & Music for ALS

Donation protected
The Beat Goes On is an intimate documentary following filmmaker Kathleen McCallum and her friend Willard Blackwell after an ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) diagnosis reshapes Willard's life, propelling them on a determined journey to find hope, innovation, and renewed purpose. Their search leads them to Seattle, where Willard tries the Encephalophone, a groundbreaking device that allows him to create music using brainwaves, restoring a powerful sense of identity and joy. Along the way, they encounter others who are challenging expectations of the disease, revealing a deeply human story of friendship, resilience, and the refusal to let a diagnosis silence the music of life.

While filming, McCallum and Blackwell interviewed several people who have defied expectations and reversed their ALS symptoms, regaining their mobility after detoxifying their bodies and following a myriad of other holistic protocols. Their stories — and Willard's — remind us that hope is stronger than prognosis.

Filmmaker's Statement:

I’ve been on this film journey for four years and have taken this self-funded project as far as I can alone. With the film now being accepted to several film festivals, I need your help to share this message with the world. Donated funds will go toward hiring a film sales agent, securing worldwide music rights for distribution, obtaining more film festival clearances, and creating DVDs for colleges and universities. This support will help ensure the film reaches students, researchers, healthcare professionals, families, and caregivers seeking knowledge, inspiration, and emerging perspectives in ALS care.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in this project and in the power of hope. Your contribution will help bring an important educational and human story to audiences who can learn from it and carry its message forward.
