The Battle Against Blue-Green Algae
Donation protected
My name is Kelsey Higgs, and I am hosting environmental education workshops as part of my Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication program with Royal Roads University. I am fundraising to offset the costs of my research project, the final step in completing my degree. I will be hosting the workshops in Hammonds Plains at the local community center on July 13th & 16th.
WHY BLUE-GREEN ALGAE?
Blue-green algae blooms are steadily increasing in lakes across Nova Scotia. As water temperatures continue to rise, the conditions become more ideal for more massive blooms to occur. The toxins produced by these blooms can be very harmful to humans, animals, and the environment. Approximately 25-75% of blue-green algae blooms are toxic and can even impact drinking water. Animals are particularly vulnerable to the cyanotoxins produced by the blooms, and death can occur within a few hours of ingestion. As a pet owner and animal lover, I recognize the need for proactive action against these potentially preventable deaths. While blue-green algae is a global concern, I will be focusing my efforts on Nova Scotia, where I hope this project will have a positive impact.
There is no simple solution to this issue. However, actions can be taken to reduce the pollution and nutrient inputs into freshwater systems.
Together, we can make a difference. At the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about blue-green algae, share local knowledge, and discuss solutions and strategies to battle blue-green algae and protect local lakes for generations to come.
PARTICIPATION INVOLVES
-Attending a community workshop (approx. 2 hours, with two possible dates)
-Complete short pre- and post-workshop surveys (taking 15-20 minutes each)
POTENTIAL BENEFITS
-Learn about blue-green algae, including: identification, prevention methods, factors that influence its growth, risks to human and animal health, bloom history, & impacts on the environment.
-Share local knowledge and collaborate on ways to address the issue locally
-Contribute to the protection of local lakes
-Build community connections
-Support local policy and environmental action
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT
