Dr. Barry Spunt was a devoted father, Sociologist, Professor and former Department Chair at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, scholar, drug researcher, project director, writer, and mentor.
Throughout his career, Dr. Spunt won millions of dollars in research grants, managed several influential large-scale research projects, published 40 peer-reviewed articles, wrote two books, and was a mentor to hundreds of students and colleagues at every level, to name a few of his accomplishments. Barry was in the process of writing his third book before he became ill.
Barry was Vice Chairman of After Hours Project Inc., and along with Dr. Richard Curtis, built the organization from the ground up until its birth in 2002.
Barry was known for loving to make jokes, being generous and never wanting anything in return, being unassuming and laid back, marching to the beat of his own drum, being "old-fashioned"; he enjoyed writing, music, traveling, enjoying good food and being there for his friends.
Barry tragically passed away on February 5th, 2021 after a torturous and brave 6-month long battle in the ICU.
To continue Barry's life long legacy of generosity and commitment to helping others, the After Hours Project Inc. is starting The Barry Spunt Scholarship award. Donations will be used towards tuition for students who are members of After Hours Project, our goal is $1,000 per student.
